Women founders planning a PR or personal branding budget
What should founder PR and personal branding cost cover?
A useful founder PR quote explains what work you are buying, who will do it and what you must contribute. Compare the deliverables, production expenses and approval process before comparing totals. FAME scopes engagements individually; this guide gives no standard fee or market price range.
Start with the business reason for the work
This is a FAME Team guide. FAME sells PR, personal branding and related services, so this is a provider's planning framework. The checklists and example below are our application, not a quotation or a transcript of Sheeraz's advice.
In his London Real interview published on 30 July 2025, Sheeraz Hasan asks why someone wants visibility and what they want to be known for (11:59–12:37). Apply that question to the budget: which business conversation should this work help you prepare for? A launch and an established founder's ongoing public profile need different scopes.
Choose a project or ongoing support
A project suits work with an identifiable finish, such as an approved founder profile and launch press kit. Ongoing support suits recurring work that someone needs to own. Ask what happens between announcements: a monthly fee needs a defined workload and review process.
| Decision | Defined project | Ongoing support |
|---|---|---|
| What you approve | Named assets and completion criteria | Recurring responsibilities and reporting |
| How work is scheduled | Milestones with approval dependencies | An agreed calendar and priority process |
| What needs clarification | Revisions and work after handover | Capacity, response expectations and renewal |
Understand what changes the quote
Two proposals called 'personal branding' can involve very different work. Updating an approved biography uses different resources from conducting interviews, checking a business history and commissioning photography. Ask the provider to explain those differences in the quotation.
The scope also changes with the number of markets and languages, production requirements, specialist involvement and urgency. A single spokesperson with prompt approvals is a different assignment from several executives with separate reviewers. Identify what already exists and what can be reused before commissioning replacements.
- Research, interviews and factual review needed before writing
- Number and format of assets, including translations
- Photography, video, design or website implementation
- Markets, outreach responsibilities and reporting needs
- Revision rounds, approval dependencies and deadline pressure
Separate included work from additional expenses
Ask for quantities and boundaries. 'Profile work' should identify which pages or biographies will change and whether the team writes, designs or publishes them. Separate agency fees from external expenses and agree who approves extra spend before it occurs.
| Work area | Ask what is included | Check separately |
|---|---|---|
| Founder story | Interviews, biography versions, revisions | Additional languages or spokespeople |
| Photography and film | Shoot, editing, final files | Travel, locations, usage permissions |
| PR | Press materials, outreach, reporting | Paid placements and sponsorships |
| Digital profiles | Named pages and approved copy | Development, hosting, ongoing maintenance |
Budget founder time as well as agency time
The founder remains responsible for explaining the business and approving public facts. Plan interview availability, access to existing materials and one person who can consolidate feedback. Agree when decisions are due and how delayed approvals affect delivery.
Request an estimate of your involvement for each stage, rather than assuming a standard weekly commitment. A new photo shoot, a sensitive announcement or a substantial rewrite may require more attention. Agree who handles routine approvals when you are travelling.
An illustrative phased scope
Consider a hypothetical founder preparing to approach distribution partners. She has an accurate product website but an outdated biography. The following sequence is a FAME Team planning example, not a client case study, standard offer or promised timetable.
First, review the existing materials and agree the founder's role, audience and public facts. The checkpoint is an approved brief. Next, commission the missing assets, perhaps a biography and partner introduction page. The checkpoint is approval of the completed files and a decision about publishing them.
Then decide whether there is a relevant announcement and enough evidence to support outreach. Quote that stage separately if its requirements remain unclear. At review, assess delivered work and relevant responses before committing to recurring support. A phased engagement can stop after the agreed assets are complete; a retainer should have a continuing purpose.
Use this quotation checklist
Send the same brief when requesting comparable proposals. Mark essential work and optional additions so you can reduce scope deliberately if the total exceeds your budget.
- Named deliverables, formats, quantities and completion criteria
- Team responsibilities and any agreed involvement from Sheeraz
- Founder inputs, approval stages and included revisions
- Fees, currency, taxes, expenses and payment milestones
- Publishing responsibilities, asset access and usage permissions
- How extra work, delays, cancellation and renewal are handled
- Reporting that separates completed work, coverage and enquiries
Does the fee include guaranteed coverage or introductions?
Confirm the activity being commissioned. Editors choose earned coverage; potential partners decide whether to meet. Paid placements should be identified separately. A proposal should distinguish the team's work from outcomes such as funding, sales or AI recommendations that it cannot promise.
Can I begin with a smaller scope?
Ask which defined piece of work would address the immediate need. Existing assets may make a focused update appropriate. Use the founder profile check to identify gaps, then discuss which ones need professional help and which your team can handle.
What should I bring to the introductory call?
Bring your goal, current website and a realistic spending limit or approval process. Explain the deadline and any work already commissioned. FAME's free 15-minute call is a starting conversation; confirm the proposed scope, fees and responsibilities before paid work begins.
